What Operating System Should Run Tally on Cloud?

Windows Server 2022 is the current best choice. Windows Server 2019 is fully supported and widely deployed. Both enable multiple simultaneous Remote Desktop sessions with proper RDS licensing. Do not accept Windows 10 or Windows 11 for a multi-user Tally server — they support only one concurrent RDP session and are unsuitable for this purpose.

How Much RAM Per User?

1.5–2 GB per concurrent user session plus 4 GB OS baseline. Use 2 GB per user for planning to allow headroom. A 5-user server needs 14 GB minimum, rounded to 16 GB. A 10-user server needs 24 GB. A 15-user server needs 34 GB, rounded to 40 GB.

Why Does CPU Need to Be Dedicated, Not Shared?

Shared CPU VPS plans allocate cores from a pool — your server gets more or fewer cycles depending on other customers' activity. During Tally report generation, CPU spikes. On shared CPU, this spike may be throttled. On dedicated CPU, your allocated cores are exclusively yours. Performance is consistent whether it is 9 AM on the last GST filing day or 3 PM on a slow Tuesday.

Why NVMe Is Not Optional

Tally database operations are small random reads and writes. NVMe delivers 300,000–700,000 random IOPS. SATA SSD delivers 50,000–80,000. HDD delivers 80–100. For 5 concurrent Tally users: on HDD, report generation takes 18–35 seconds; on NVMe, it takes 3–7 seconds. The gap widens with more concurrent users because NVMe's IOPS advantage compounds under concurrent load.
