Which Remote Tally Access Method Is Most Reliable?

Cloud server via RDP is the most reliable and least maintenance-intensive option. Tally.NET works for occasional single-user access. VPN to a local server works but creates ongoing maintenance overhead and depends on office internet reliability. Here is each method in detail.

Method 1: Tally on Cloud via RDP (Recommended)

Tally is installed on a Windows Server in a data centre. Users connect via Remote Desktop from any device. They see full Tally, work normally, and disconnect when done. All data stays on the server.

Requires: cloud hosting plan, multi-user Tally license, internet connection (5 Mbps minimum per user). No VPN. No office internet dependency. Scales to any number of concurrent users. Reliability: very high — the server runs 24/7 in a professional data centre regardless of office status.

Method 2: Tally.NET Remote Access

Tally's built-in feature that proxies remote connections through Tally's servers. The remote user needs Tally installed locally; the connection routes through Tally.NET to your office server.

Requires: active TSS subscription, Tally installed on the remote device, reliable office internet, office server running. Reliability: moderate — fails whenever office internet or office server has issues. Suitable for occasional single-user remote access. Not suitable for multiple simultaneous remote users.

Method 3: VPN to Office Server

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel into your office network. Remote users connect to the VPN, then access Tally as if they were in the office.

Requires: VPN-capable router or dedicated server, technical configuration, VPN client on every device. Reliability: low to moderate — affected by office internet quality and by firewalls at hotels or client sites that block VPN traffic. Maintenance: ongoing — certificates, new user setup, troubleshooting. Suitable only for businesses with IT staff to maintain it.

Which Method Is Right for Your Business?

If you need multiple staff accessing Tally simultaneously from different locations, cloud RDP is the only practical option. Tally.NET does not support reliable concurrent remote users; VPN performance degrades significantly with multiple simultaneous users on a typical office internet connection.
